Besides the grand tombs and other sights, the stained-glass windows of the New Church also demand your attention.

History

Roughly speaking, two types of stained-glass windows can be discovered in the Nieuwe Kerk: windows with biblical themes and memorial windows like the Prince William window or the Wilhelm window. The latter category refers to important events or persons in Dutch history.

New collection

Even in the Middle Ages, the Nieuwe Kerk was colourfully decorated with stained-glass windows. However, after the city fire in 1536 and the Delft Thunderclap (explosion of the cross) in 1654, none of this remained. Only in the twentieth century did the church regain a new collection, most of which were made by Willem Adriaan van Konijnenburg.

Look closely

The newest window was unveiled in 2006 and depicts the Bible story of the revival of the daughter of Jairus. This work by artist Annemiek Punt is distinguished from the rest by bright colours and abstract shapes. Therefore, if you want to see Jesus' hands, the daughter's face and a butterfly, you have to look closely.
