Stained-glass windows

A series of beautiful stained-glass windows complete the Old Church's striking appearance. When the sun shines in through these 'stories of glass' it creates an impressive spectacle of light, lines and colours.

Shattered

In 1406, the Old Church received its first stained-glass window. More followed over the course of that century. Unfortunately, due to the city fire of 1536 and the Delft Thunderstorm in 1654 (a cross explosion), all the windows were lost.

Special collection

It was not until the twentieth century that the stained-glass windows returned one by one to where bare glass had hitherto sat. In total, the church now contains twenty-seven stained-glass windows, each with its own story. This extraordinary collection is considered the life's work of renowned glazier, Joep Nicolas.

Bible stories

The windows in the Old Church are very colourful; from ochre yellow to sky blue, from deep red to dark green. Most depict familiar Bible stories, such as 'the parable of the prodigal son' or 'Moses in the rush basket'. But there are also some fascinating memorial stalls on display, such as the Liberation Window and the Wilhelmina Window.
